RYAN Christie described Celtic’s Europa League win over Cluj as fantastic and said the performance has left the team confident of winning their remaining home games in the group.

The Hoops made amends for their loss to Cluj in August with a dominant 2-0 win against the Romanian champions at Paradise. Neil Lennon’s side started the game with a high tempo and the pressure paid off when Odsonne Edouard headed in on 20 minutes with his 10th goal of the season.

Celtic started the second period in a similar fashion and doubled the lead shortly after the restart when Mohamed Elyounoussi scored his debut goal. Christie was delighted with the result and said the win helped make amends for the previous game.

“It was a very good night,” Christie told the official Celtic website. “It was our first home game in the group and we really wanted these three points, so to do that and get a bit of revenge on Cluj was fantastic. Hopefully we can kick on now. The gaffer touched on it - if we want to progress in this group we need to win all our home games.

“We knew playing at home we had to take the game to Cluj. We’ve found earlier in the season they can be frustrating and hard to break down so we knew we had to be aggressive and play expansive attacking football. It was good and the likes of Mo, Jamesey and Eddie were all on top form tonight so I’m delighted for them.

“We were maybe lacking that kind of maturity in the first game against them but we showed it tonight. The gaffer said to us at half-time we needed to get that second goal. We came out and got it and after that it was very comfortable. We didn’t really go chasing and stayed tight a bit more. We did our hard work and limited them to very few chances.”

Celtic’s win leaves the Scottish champions top of Group E with four points after the draw away to Rennes in the opening game two weeks ago. Christie admitted Celtic were in a good position in the group but said it was important they maintained their form by winning all of their home games.

“We had in the back of our minds the last result and we wanted to put that right and give a true account of ourselves," he said. "We want to now go away from home and do that again but, first and foremost, we need to win all our home games in Europe.

“It’s better being in this position than chasing the group. We know how much hard work there is to do. A lot’s been said about how hard the group is, so we need to keep our heads down and make sure we pick up points home and away and see where that gets us.”
