CELTIC look to have hit the ground running this season after an impressive start domestically and in Europe, but Scott Brown issued words of wisdom in asserting he and his team-mates would not get ahead of themselves as they looked to continue their fine form.

Neil Lennon’s side have taken all six points from their opening two league games, scoring an impressive 12 goals in the process, and have progressed through the first two qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League.

The start to the new campaign has heightened expectations around the Treble Treble winners, but the Hoops captain said the key to consistency and success was remaining focused on only the net opponent.

“We’re scoring lots of goals and creating chances,” said Brown when addressing the media at Lennoxtown today (Monday). “It is a great start but we can’t say it’s been phenomenal. We’re only two games into the season and there’s a long, long way to go. There’s going to be hard nights in the Scottish winter to come, and it’ll be a difficult season.

“The confidence is high. We scored 12 goals in the first two games and it took us until October 8th to do that last year. We’re looking good going forward so we need to make sure we keep working on that and keep working on our attacking options. The lads have been on fire in front of goal and we need to make sure that continues.

“The good thing is, it’s not just one or two people who are scoring, it seems to be coming from everywhere and we need to make sure we keep that attacking threat in every game now."

Celtic’s Champions League qualification campaign has made for a packed schedule for the Scottish champions, who have already played five competitive European games in addition to the first two league fixtures.

Brown said the option to rotate the squad with other quality players was a massive boost in ensuring the Hoops could maintain their high standards in every game.

“We can’t rely on 11 lads to play week-in-week-out,” he said. “There are so many games and changes with injury and fatigue throughout the season. You’re not guaranteed a start but the lads coming on have been phenomenal. They’ve brought that bit of pace and energy. The pressing levels against Motherwell in the second half were phenomenal.”

Leigh Griffiths has been in excellent form since returning to the squad and Brown was full of praise for his team-mate who has scored in both of Celtic’s two league games so far.

“Everyone knows how good Griff is,” he said. “Last season it wasn’t to be for him. He had a few issues but he’s getting fitter, sharper, stronger and that left foot is a wand. We just want him back to his best for Celtic and Scotland because we know how vital he is for us. He’s one of the best finishers I’ve ever seen.”
