IN his own words, it was an emotional night for Leigh Griffiths as he marked his first competitive start of the season with a goal. The striker netted the Hoops’ third of five without reply against Estonian outfit Nomme Kalju, and Neil Lennon hailed his efforts.

“I’m delighted for Leigh,” the Celtic manager said. “There is an amount of anticipation whenever he stands over a free-kick because we know what’s he’s capable of.

“It was a great finish, and to be fair, the reception he’s got from the players, the supporters, the club, makes me very proud. He can be very proud of that too, and it’ll do his confidence the world of good.”

Neil Lennon said Griffiths will continue to work on his fitness – both on the training pitch and on matchday – and said that while the forward deserves to celebrate, he hopes Wednesday night’s goal is the first of many more to come.

Moreover, the manager addressed his decision to play with both Griffiths and striking partner Odsonne Edoaurd up front in his side’s UEFA Champions League second qualifying round encounter, and likewise praised the Frenchman’s contribution over 90 minutes.

He added: “Leigh was happy at half-time. We were 3-0 up and in a great place. I wasn’t happy with the first 20 minutes, but it’s been a great night for Leigh. It’s just one step in the right direction for him.

“It’s good to have two goalscorers in the team. Why have one on the bench? You can tweak the formation and although Odsonne didn’t score, I thought he was fantastic.”
