MARTIN O’NEILL ERA

In the early years of the 2000s, under the stewardship of Martin O’Neill, the Hoops became regular competitors in the Champions League, reaching the group stages in three of his final four years in charge.

There were huge moments in that time, as the Bhoys defeated the likes of Lyon, Porto, Anderlecht and Rosenborg.

There were notable draws with some of Europe’s top teams, as they battled with the likes of AC Milan, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The highlight in those years was in a 4-3 thriller over Juventus on a Hallowe'en night in 2001, as O’Neill’s team spooked the Serie A giants on an amazing night, capped off by stunning goals from Chris Sutton and a man-of-the-match performance from Lubomir Moravcik.

GORDON STRACHAN ERA

Over four seasons in charge, Gordon Strachan also made the group stages on three occasions but took the team one step further by reaching the Last 16 on two occasions.

In his first season in 2006/07, the magic moment came on that night against the English champions-to-be Manchester United, as they left Celtic Park shell-shocked after a spellbinding free-kick from Shunsuke Nakamura and a late penalty save from Artur Boruc sealed a 1-0 win and qualification for the knockout rounds.

The following year there were more huge moments as the team battled through the qualification stage in a tense penalty shootout over Spartak Moscow at Celtic Park.

Last-minute goals were the theme of that campaign as Paradise witnessed injury-time winners over AC Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk.
